South Africa Reviews Israel’s Response in ICJ Gaza Case

(MENAFN) The South African government has acknowledged Israel’s submission of its response to written pleadings in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) case concerning the Gaza Strip, as stated by reports.

According to a presidential statement, South Africa will examine Israel’s response and determine whether to request the court’s permission to make further written submissions or move directly to the oral phase of the proceedings.

Israel filed its response on March 12, following two extensions granted by the ICJ to a deadline originally set for July 28, 2025, in reply to South Africa’s memorial submitted on October 28, 2024.

"South Africa remains committed to playing its part, along with others, to fulfil the promises of the Genocide Convention and the UN Charter," President Cyril Ramaphosa said.

Ramaphosa also emphasized the importance of upholding international law and reaffirmed the critical role of the United Nations and dispute resolution mechanisms like the ICJ.

The presidential statement highlighted that the situation in Gaza, combined with escalating tensions in the Gulf and Israel’s ongoing strikes in Lebanon, increases the risk of a broader conflict with serious implications for regional and global peace and security.

South Africa filed its case against Israel in December 2023 over alleged acts of genocide in Gaza. The ICJ has yet to issue a ruling, but South Africa has reiterated its intent to pursue the case until a final judgment is reached.
