South Africa hunts suspect after deadly tavern shooting

(MENAFN) South African authorities have launched a manhunt following a violent shooting at a tavern in Bekkersdal, a township near Johannesburg, that claimed the lives of nine people and injured ten others.

According to police reports, around a dozen unidentified gunmen arrived in two vehicles before opening fire on patrons inside the licensed tavern. Officers said the assailants continued to shoot indiscriminately as they fled the scene. The attack occurred at approximately 01:00 local time on Sunday (23:00 GMT Saturday).

The incident underscores South Africa’s ongoing struggle with violent crime. The country has one of the highest murder rates in the world, with recent figures from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime showing 45 homicides per 100,000 people in 2023–24. Authorities are appealing to the public for any information that could help identify the attackers and bring them to justice.

The community has been left shaken, and local law enforcement has increased patrols in the area to prevent further violence. Investigators are examining CCTV footage and witness accounts as part of the ongoing investigation.
