Mass Shooting in South Africa Leaves Nine Dead

(MENAFN) A deadly firearms attack in a South African township has left at least nine people dead and 10 injured, authorities confirmed Sunday, marking another violent incident in the nation's most populous province.

The massacre unfolded just before 1 a.m. local time (2300 GMT Saturday) in Bekkersdal township, located near Johannesburg—the country's largest metropolis and financial center—according to the South African Police Service.

"It is reported that about 12 unknown suspects in a white kombi and a silver sedan opened fire at tavern patrons and continued to shoot randomly as they fled the scene," the statement said.

Law enforcement has mobilized extensive resources to track down the perpetrators. Gauteng Acting Police Commissioner Fred Kekana announced that multiple crime investigation and management teams have been dispatched to the scene to conduct comprehensive inquiries.

Authorities have not yet determined what prompted the attack, police officials stated. The assailants remain at large as investigators work to piece together the circumstances surrounding the violence.

The shooting adds to concerns about violent crime in Gauteng province, where Johannesburg serves as South Africa's economic engine. Tavern shootings have become an increasingly troubling pattern in townships across the nation in recent years.
