Family of late S. African envoy of France wants clarity of his death
Mthethwa, 58, died on October 2, 2025, after falling from the 22nd floor of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Paris. The cause of his death remains unclear, prompting ongoing investigations by French authorities in coordination with South African law enforcement.
South Africa’s acting Minister of Police, Professor Firoz Cachalia, said on Friday that five experienced investigators had been dispatched to France. The delegation, led by Major General Maqhashalala, Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection in the Western Cape, is working closely with French authorities to support the family’s search for answers.
Speaking from Mthethwa’s home in Kwambonambi, his brother-in-law, Khulekani Buthelezi, emphasized the family’s call for a thorough and transparent investigation. “Combining different groups and skills will result in a report that provides facts about what transpired,” he said. “We hope that, with a team of diverse expertise, the outcome will be as expected: the truth, nothing more.”
The family continues to grapple with the emotional toll of Mthethwa’s sudden passing, particularly his widow.
